Bathroom Remodeling/ Bathroom Lighting
What type of lighting should be installed in bathrooms / bathroom remodeling / bathroom design?
It is extremely important to remember that lighting is the most important part of bathroom design during home remodeling / house addition. Because of a close contact with water and constant moisture in the air, installation of effective ventilation, appropriate electrical wiring, installation of GFCI outlets, and installation of watertight light fixtures is not only a matter of taste but foremost a safety issue. There are two types of bathroom vanity lights: strip lights and wall fixtures. They are great for saving space and reducing shadows. Strip lights are available in a variety of styles, including globes and downturned or upturned cups. They can be mounted horizontally above the mirror or on its sides. These bathroom lighting fixtures significantly reduce shadows. Wall lights like brackets and sconces are ideal for accenting and complementing overhead lights. They can become a decorative motif and further reduce shadows if installed beside mirrors. The location of your vanity light fixtures will depend on the size of your mirror. Best option for large mirrors is to mount your bathroom lights to either side of the mirror. For small mirrors mount your bathroom light fixtures on either side, about 36 to 40 inches apart. Whether the fixtures are mounted on the mirror itself or placed on the wall, the center of each bulb should be at eye level, or approximately 66 inches above your floor. We also recommend dimmers for your bathroom vanity lights to provide soothing ambient light for relaxing in the tub.
To eliminate moisture, mold, mildew from forming in the bathroom do not forget about good quality bathroom exhaust fan. Bathroom exhaust fan will draw out the moisture from the bathroom. These fan units can come with a built-in heater to keep you warm while you dry off.
Usually there is no window by your bathtub, shower and Jacuzzi and the area can be very dark. To solve the problem install watertight fixtures that have watertight lens covers and make sure you are safe when stepping into and out of your bathtub, shower and Jacuzzi. Most popular choice for our customers in Mount Prospect is an installation of a moisture recessed can lights with shower trim inside the shower. There are plenty of elegant trims and lenses available, meaning you can customize your shower light to your taste.
Light switches for these lights may be positioned by the mirror itself or near the entry door. Switches for the bathing areas should be held away from the water’s edge by at least six feet.
You should position at least one outlet within one foot of the sink, but not over the sink where a cord will have to hang into the sink. This outlet should be a 20-amp ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) that can supply power to hair dryers, curling irons, razors and others. Keep in mind that you may need more than one outlet.
The lighting and fan circuit must be separate from the outlet power. You do not what to overload a circuit and have it trip. It will shut off the power to the devices, and also to the lighting in the room.

Kitchen Remodeling/ Kitchen Lighting
What type of lighting should be installed in kitchen / kitchen remodeling / kitchen design?
Every kitchen remodel should include task lighting, ambient lighting, accent lighting, and decorating lighting. Single light source like one ceiling-mounted light fixture will not provide all the necessary light for a kitchen and will have a negative impact on the kitchen design.
Task Lighting like lighting under cabinets so you could see well while preparing food and light inside a pantry closet to see items on the shelves. The most commonly used task lighting by our clients in Mount Prospect or near Arlington Heights, Des Plaines, Elk Grove Village, Morton Grove, Niles, Palatine, Park Ridge, Prospect Heights, Rolling Meadows, Wheeling is under cabinet strip lighting.
Ambient Lighting is a gentle light that fills the kitchen and softens the shadows. Ambient light makes the room warm and welcoming. At LMV Electric our licensed electricians can install pendant lights, opaque wall sconces. If there is enough room between ceiling and cabinets we can install ambient light there.
Accent Lighting like recessed adjustable fixtures used to spotlight art, track lighting, lighting inside glass-front cabinets. Accent lighting gives depth and to the environment.
Decorative Lighting like chandeliers, pendant lights and wall sconces will add interest to the kitchen space.
Recently very popular type of lights installed by our clients from Mount Prospect or near Arlington Heights, Des Plaines, Elk Grove Village, Morton Grove, Niles, Palatine, Park Ridge, Prospect Heights, Rolling Meadows include toe-kick lights. Those lights are installed underneath base cabinets to illuminate the floor. This type of light add not only ambiance but serves as a functional night light.
At LMV Electric we recommend installing few dimmer switches to adjust light levels in the kitchen for different tasks. We recommend a bright light for cooking or cleaning up and a dim light for romantic dinners and conversations.
